Choosing a Logo For Your Business
I have been working on a few new web site projects over the last couple of weeks and have been thinking long and hard about the brand image they must convey. After all the logo is what the user or customer first sees when they visit the site, it is important for that first impression.
That first impression is what I look for in a logo. I don’t want it to be so loud as to scare people off, but on the other hand I don’t want it to be a wall flower. I tend to look for power, simplicity and friendliness.
Simplicity is the hardestt to get right I think. Balancing simplicity with a professional look can be a tricky business, but simplicity will help your logo stick in someones mind and be recognisable in a quick glance. Think of the McDonald’s M (or golden arches as they are called around here). You can spot it very quickly when scanning a high street or even when driving. Red and Yellow might not be everyones first choice colour scheme, but you have to hand it to them – it works!
Colour is an important message too. Plenty of research has been done on human reaction to colour. There have even been books written on the subject. Lets look again at the McDonald’s logo and what that Red and Yellow says to us (according to the experts). Firstly the Red creates a human reaction of energy, excitement, danger and passion. While the Yellow says – Fun, happiness and laughter. I think they picked those colours carefully, don’t you? I know my kids feel those things when they see a McDonald’s. I used to too, but I feel the danger (of the cost!) more as I get older. Read the rest of this entry »
